A perennial plant that produces black, sweet berries every year. Flowers bloom in late spring and early summer and are white or pale pink. Leaves were chewed or made into a tea to treat bleeding gums.

Latin name: Rubus fruticosus

Physical Properties

Blackberry leaves have long been thought to offer health-promoting and immunity-boosting characteristics. Hippocrates advocated soaking blackberry stems and leaves in white wine to help in delivery [1]. In their assessment of the traditional applications of Rubus fruticosus leaves, Zia-UI-Haq et al. [2] found that the decoction of the leaves has been used as a tonic and a mouthwash; gargles aid in the treatment of thrush, gum inflammation, sore throat, and mouth ulcers. The leaves are often eaten to strengthen gums and treat thrush. As an astringent, a poultice of the leaves is administered on abscesses and skin ulcers. Furthermore, blackberry leaves and roots have long been used as a home cure for anemia and menstruation, diarrhea, dysentery, cystitis, and hemorrhoids.
