A member of the mint family. Lavender is native to Africa, parts of India, and the Mediterranean. The flowers are purple, white, or blue, depending on the variety.

Roman soldiers would use lavender to scent their baths and wash clothes. Lavender was spread on the floor in churches in Spain to prevent evil spirits from coming on St. John's Day.
