A perennial herb from the mint family Lamiaceae. Marjoram is sometimes confused with oregano, a similar herb. It's believed to have come from the Mediterranean and Anatolia regions.

Marjoram was a symbol of happiness to the Romans and Greeks.​ Ancient Greeks used it in treatments for poison and convulsions. Newly married couples would wear crowns made of it. When marjoram came to England, it was used in tobacco and beer for flavor.
