Rhodonite was discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 1790s.

It immediately became a popular stone in Russian culture as a protective charm for babies, travelers, and nobility. Rhodonite was even designated as Russia's national stone in 1913!

Rhodonite is known as orletz in Russian, which means "the Eagle stone," because eagles were drawn to it and took bits to their nests.
